Matagorda County EOC Briefing

9 AM Sept 3rd, 2017

At 8:50 am the current level of the Colorado River is 35.3 feet. I have been looking forward to this day that I could announce the river has finally stopped climbing.

The Emergency Operation Center continues to operate for the citizens of Matagorda County.

We are moving the focus from the crisis to recovery.

We have friends and family that have suffered loses and hardship, we have a lot of work ahead.

As Church services resume today, keep them in your prayers, and we can thank God that we were spared from the predicted disaster.

Late last night our last group of individuals returned home.  They were so happy to be back home, one gentlemen got on his knees and rubbed the grass and celebrated that it was “his grass.”

We still have a few people that needed medical care and will return when they have been cleared to travel.

I understand getting gas for your vehicles is hit and miss in town, we are getting deliveries but not on a regular basis. Keep checking with the stores and share the word with your friends.  Please conserve fuel so our first responders can continue to serve and protect.

We continue to receive information from the County ISD’s…..

Bay City ISD School teachers and staff reports to work on September 5th and students return on September 6th.  Van Vleck reports the same schedule.

Palacios wants both teachers and students to report on Tuesday September 5th.

Check with Matagorda ISD and Tidehaven ISD for the latest information, they are still accessing the campus conditions.

Communicate with the school ISD’s the way you would for a bad weather day.

Our MEHOP clinic is open today. The hours are 8 AM to 5 PM

The Matagorda Regional Medical Center is open but the cafeteria remains closed to the public.

Other businesses are open or in the process of opening.

Please drive careful, we have large trucks and convoys moving products and equipment through Matagorda County.

Please be mindful of pets loose in the County.

Animal rescue and reunification efforts continue and are located at the Matagorda County fairgrounds. To volunteer or provide pet food please contact Max Cruz at (979) 323-4593. If you have lost a pet please look on the

Matagorda Lost/Found Pets Hurricane Harvey

Facebook page.

We do have plenty of FEMA staff and inspectors in Matagorda County.

Please continue to be aware there are scam artists working this area.

One way to stay safe is to think about the scams as unsafe emails, we have been told not to open strange emails from someone we don’t know. The same for people coming to your door …… please be aware.

Consider using contractors and suppliers from Matagorda County they have been in business for years.

This way you know the work will be completed successfully.

If you have any questions consider calling one our local Chamber of Commerce’s

You can call the Bay City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture the number is 979-245-8333 or call the Palacios Chamber at 361-972-2615.

I visited with FEMA staff yesterday and we are working on getting a mobile van that will be able to move around the County to help everyone with you needs. We will make sure you know when and where, it will be located.

We want to make it as convenient as possible, please save your receipts and document your loses.

If you have questions call the FEMA Hotline at 1-800-621-3362.

As I said we are moving to recovery, continue to be careful and stay safe.

Remember the goal is the health and safety for every person.

Thank you

SELKIRK WATER SUPPLY URGENT NOTICE/Check offs to PIERS*

URGENT:

Boil Water Notice for Community Public Water Systems

 August 29, 2017

Due to reduced distribution system pressure the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the Selkirk Water Supply Corp. (PWS # 1610027) -public water system to notify all customers to boil their water prior to consumption (e.g., washing hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc). Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, and all customers should follow these directions).

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.

In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source for drinking water or human consumption purposes.

When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the public water system officials will notify customers that the water is safe for drinking water or human consumption purposes.

Once the boil water notice is no longer in effect, the public water system will issue a notice to customers that rescinds the boil water notice in a manner similar to this notice.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

If you have questions concerning this matter, you may contact Harley Aaron President of SWSC at (979) 235-7023 Other Board of Directors: Lee Wikoff at (979) 479-2641; John Dixon at (979) 943-7114; Karen Crain at (979) 241-1297; Dennis Bilyeu at (281) 221-7391; Melvin Gavender at(979) 240-1693 0r Debbie Pilcik at (979) 877-8249.

***Please check your water cutoffs to  piers if located on the River. Many piers are destroyed and water is running. SWSC needs to flush the lines to sterilize and test but have many lines broken. If you need help with cut offs contact neighbors or Board. Boil water in effect until flushing and testing can be completed.***

Hurricane Harvey Update and River Stage

Bay City Tribune reports:

Posted: Sunday, August 27, 2017 11:27 pm | Updated: 11:55 pm, Sun Aug 27, 2017.

10 foot floods expected, evacuate by 1 p.m. today officials say Brenda Burr The Bay City Tribune | 0 comments

At approximately 10:30 last night, Sunday, August 27, 2017 County Judge, Nate McDonald, EOC Director, and Bay City Mayor Mark Bricker made a joint announcement.

“Today the Matagorda County Emergency Operations Center received a flood model from the Texas State Operations Center that projects severe flooding of every structure in Bay City with up to 10 feet of water in downtown. Western Gulf Rivers Forecast Center and the National Weather Service have confirmed the accuracy of this model,” the announcement said.

This flooding will close Highway 35 West and prevent the ability to evacuate after tomorrow, Monday August 28, 2017, approximately at 1:00 p.m. This means there will be absolutely no emergency response, including law enforcement, fire and EMS services, in all areas of the County. Basic services, such as food and water, will not be available. Mandatory Evacuations MUST be completed before this deadline.”

Judge McDonald stated, “We don’t take this measure lightly … please heed these directions.”
